The work Vølve until the Paint Peels Off consists of a reconstruction of the figure Sheela na gig integrated into the architecture of Galleri ROM. Sheela na gig is a figure that has been found in several old churches across Europe. The figure depicts a woman who opens her vulva toward the viewer without shame and with a mysterious smile on her face. It is debated what she symbolizes, but one suggestion is that she is a pre-Christian figure often placed near doors, windows, and other openings to keep evil spirits out. The figure is always presented as a relief, blending into the walls while simultaneously opening up the architecture, both physically and metaphorically, through her vulva.
